BEWARE OF RABIES
Rabies is a viral disease that is almost 100% fatal once symptoms appear, making it one of the most serious public health concerns. However, it is also 100% preventable through prompt medical intervention.
At a multidisciplinary center like ACE, managing rabies involves a race against time, combining the “Science” of immunology with the “Heart” of emergency response.
1. How Rabies Works
The rabies virus attacks the Central Nervous System. It is usually transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal via a bite, scratch, or even a lick on broken skin.
-
The Incubation Period: The virus travels along the nerves to the brain. This can take weeks or months. During this time, the person feels fine, but this is the only window to stop the disease.
-
The Clinical Stage: Once the virus reaches the brain, it causes inflammation (Encephalitis). Symptoms include hydrophobia (fear of water), confusion, and agitation. At this stage, medical science currently has no cure.
2. Immediate “First Aid” Protocol
If you or a loved one is bitten or scratched by an animal (most commonly dogs, cats, or livestock), you must act immediately:
-
Wash the Wound: Use soap and running water for at least 15 minutes. This mechanical action is the most effective way to reduce the viral load.
-
Avoid Irritants: Do not apply “tandok,” garlic, or vinegar. These traditional methods can further damage tissue and do not kill the virus.
-
Seek Medical Help: Go directly to the Emergency Care unit or an accredited Animal Bite Treatment Center (ABTC).
